Costa Rica & Panama – South Pacific, Rainforest & Panama Canal

7 Days / 6 Nights

Tour Overview

Experience two countries in one compact Central American journey, combining Costa Rica’s wild southern Pacific coast with the energy, history, and engineering landmarks of Panama City.

This seven-day itinerary travels from San José south toward Uvita, the Golfo Dulce, and Costa Rica’s remote southern rainforest before crossing the border into Panama. Instead of repeating the classic Arenal–Monteverde–Manuel Antonio circuit, this journey focuses on a quieter and less conventional side of Costa Rica before finishing with one of Latin America’s most fascinating cities and the Panama Canal.

Terravelers can expect tropical beaches, mangrove ecosystems, rainforest wildlife, dramatic coastal scenery, a land border crossing, and finally the contrast of modern Panama City, historic Casco Viejo, and the Miraflores Locks.

The itinerary is designed for travelers who want to see more than one country without turning every day into a race between hotels.

Day 1 – Arrival in San José, Costa Rica

Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport and meet your private driver after clearing immigration and collecting your luggage.

Transfer to a comfortable hotel in or near San José.

For most international arrivals, we recommend accommodation on the western side of the metropolitan area or near Alajuela, Santa Ana, or Escazú, depending on arrival time and the following day’s route.

There is no reason to overload the first evening.

After an international flight, the best introduction to Costa Rica is often a quiet dinner, a shower, and a proper night’s sleep rather than another scheduled excursion.

The remainder of the evening is at leisure.

Overnight: San José area
Meals included: None

Day 2 – San José to Uvita & Costa Rica’s South Pacific Coast

After breakfast, meet your private driver and travel south toward Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Leave the Central Valley behind and descend toward warmer tropical landscapes before continuing along the coast toward Uvita and Bahía Ballena.

This region feels noticeably different from Costa Rica’s more heavily visited central Pacific destinations. The rainforest grows close to the ocean, the coastline remains comparatively undeveloped, and the mountains rise almost directly behind the beaches.

After arrival, check into the hotel and explore the surroundings.

Depending on arrival time, visit Marino Ballena National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most distinctive coastal protected areas.

The park protects beaches, marine habitat, mangroves, and the famous naturally formed Whale Tail, a sand-and-rock formation visible most clearly around low tide. Access to the formation depends on tidal conditions, so exact timing must remain flexible.

The evening is free.

Overnight: Uvita / Bahía Ballena
Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 – Uvita, Sierpe Mangroves & Golfo Dulce

After breakfast, continue deeper into Costa Rica’s southern Pacific region.

Travel toward Sierpe, one of the principal gateways to the wetlands, mangroves, and waterways of the Osa region.

Board a small boat with a local naturalist guide and explore the mangrove ecosystem.

Mangrove forests are among the most productive ecosystems in the tropics. Their tangled roots provide shelter for fish, reptiles, birds, and countless smaller species while also protecting the coastline from erosion.

Wildlife sightings may include:

  • crocodiles
  • caimans
  • monkeys
  • iguanas
  • herons
  • kingfishers
  • scarlet macaws
  • shorebirds
  • tropical waterbirds

As always in genuinely wild environments, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

After the excursion, continue south toward the Golfo Dulce region.

The Gulf lies between mainland Costa Rica and the Osa Peninsula and is surrounded by some of the most biologically rich rainforest in Central America.

Arrive during the afternoon and check into the hotel or lodge.

The remainder of the day is free to relax and enjoy the forest and coastal environment.

Overnight: Golfo Dulce / Golfito region
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 4 – Rainforest & Wildlife of Costa Rica’s Wild South

Today is dedicated to the rainforest ecosystems surrounding the Golfo Dulce and southern Osa region.

Rather than forcing a long-distance transfer into the itinerary, this day gives terravelers time to explore one of Costa Rica’s less crowded nature regions properly.

Depending on the selected lodge, weather conditions, and traveler interests, the day may include a guided visit to Piedras Blancas National Park, a private rainforest reserve, or another protected forest area around the Golfo Dulce.

Piedras Blancas protects extensive lowland tropical rainforest and is open year-round.

Optional Corcovado National Park

For travelers who want a more demanding wildlife experience, a visit to Corcovado National Park may be incorporated depending on lodge location, park availability, weather, and transport logistics.

Corcovado is exceptional, but it should not be treated as a casual add-on. Distances, boat access, permits, weather, and park regulations all matter.

For that reason, Terra Sur Travels confirms a Corcovado excursion individually rather than promising an unrealistic one-size-fits-all schedule.

Return to the hotel or lodge in the afternoon.

Overnight: Golfo Dulce / Golfito region
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 5 – Costa Rica to Panama via Paso Canoas & David

After an early breakfast, leave the Golfo Dulce region and travel toward the Costa Rica–Panama border at Paso Canoas.

Your driver will take you to the border area, where immigration and customs formalities are completed.

International border crossings in Latin America are not airport-style conveyor belts. Procedures and waiting times can vary considerably depending on traffic, holidays, immigration controls, and local conditions.

For that reason, Terra Sur Travels builds sufficient flexibility into this travel day.

After entering Panama, continue to David, the principal city of Chiriquí Province.

From David, take a domestic flight to Panama City.

Air Panama currently operates direct flights from David to Panama City several times per day, with a scheduled flying time of approximately 45 minutes. Flights arrive at Albrook Marcos A. Gelabert Airport, conveniently located within Panama City rather than at the larger international airport outside the center. Schedules remain subject to operational change and are confirmed for the actual travel date.

On arrival in Panama City, meet your private driver and transfer to the hotel.

The contrast with Costa Rica’s southern rainforest is immediate.

After several days surrounded by jungle and Pacific coastline, terravelers suddenly find themselves among towers, highways, historic neighborhoods, and ships waiting to cross one of the world’s most important waterways.

The evening is free.

Overnight: Panama City
Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 – Panama City & Panama Canal

After breakfast, begin a full day exploring Panama City.

The day is divided into two contrasting experiences: the city itself and the Panama Canal.

Morning – Historic & Modern Panama City

Meet your private guide and begin with the historic center of Casco Viejo.

Walk through narrow streets lined with restored colonial buildings, churches, plazas, cafés, government buildings, and rooftop terraces.

The district tells a very different story from the modern skyline visible across the bay.

There is deliberately no attempt to visit every neighborhood in a few hours.

The point is to understand how Panama City developed and to see the contrast between colonial history and the modern commercial capital.

Enjoy lunch before continuing toward the Panama Canal.

Afternoon – Miraflores Locks & Panama Canal

Travel to the Miraflores Visitor Center, the most convenient Panama Canal visitor facility from central Panama City.

The visitor center overlooks the Miraflores Locks and provides an excellent introduction to the engineering, history, and operation of the canal.

Depending on ship traffic and the confirmed program, terravelers may watch commercial vessels pass through the lock system.

The experience can include:

  • panoramic viewing areas
  • canal interpretation
  • observation of lock operations
  • history of the Panama Canal
  • explanation of ship transit procedures
  • Panama Canal IMAX presentation

The Miraflores Visitor Center is currently open daily, with the ticket office generally operating from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the visitor center until 6:00 p.m. Current schedules and access arrangements are reconfirmed before travel.

Return to Panama City in the late afternoon.

Enjoy the final evening at leisure.

For travelers who still have energy, Panama City offers excellent restaurants, rooftop bars, waterfront walks, and nightlife.

For everyone else, there is also the perfectly respectable option of doing absolutely nothing after six days crossing two countries.

Overnight: Panama City
Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Day 7 – Departure from Panama City

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.

Depending on departure time, the morning is free for a final walk, coffee, or relaxed breakfast.

Meet your private driver and transfer to Tocumen International Airport for your international departure.

Traffic in Panama City can be unpredictable, particularly during weekday rush hours, so transfer times are planned conservatively.

Arrive at the airport with sufficient time for international check-in, immigration, and security procedures.

Meals included: Breakfast
End point: Tocumen International Airport, Panama City
