Cross Colombia from Bogotá to the coffee mountains on a ten-day journey through dynamic cities, colonial villages, dramatic Andean scenery, and two very different coffee regions. Start in Bogotá, continue overland through Villa de Leyva and Barichara, fly from Bucaramanga to Medellín, and explore the city before heading into the Antioquian countryside. Finish with Guatapé, a genuine farm-to-cup coffee experience in Jardín, and the towering wax palms of the Cocora Valley near Salento. This is a varied first-time Colombia itinerary that combines urban culture, heritage towns, landscapes, and coffee without relying on long overnight journeys.
Arrive at El Dorado International Airport and meet your private driver for the transfer to your hotel in Bogotá.
After check-in, keep the first afternoon relatively light. Bogotá sits at roughly 2,600 meters above sea level, and even experienced travelers may notice the altitude during their first hours in the city.
Depending on arrival time, explore the streets around your hotel, enjoy a first Colombian coffee, or visit a nearby restaurant for dinner.
If energy levels allow, take an introductory walk through La Candelaria, Bogotá’s historic center, where colonial buildings, colorful facades, universities, churches, street art, cafés, and political history sit side by side.

After breakfast, begin a full-day private exploration of Bogotá.
Start in La Candelaria, walking through the historic center toward Plaza de Bolívar.
Continue to the Gold Museum, home to one of the world’s most important collections of pre-Hispanic goldwork. The museum provides an excellent introduction to the Indigenous cultures that inhabited Colombia long before the Spanish conquest.

The road passes agricultural landscapes, mountain valleys, and small towns before reaching one of Colombia’s best-preserved colonial settlements.

After lunch, explore Villa de Leyva on foot.
Its enormous cobbled Plaza Mayor, whitewashed colonial houses, tiled roofs, courtyards, churches, and quiet side streets create a striking contrast with Bogotá.

After breakfast, continue north through the departments of Boyacá and Santander.
This is one of the longer road journeys of the trip, but the landscape changes constantly between highland farming areas, canyon country, small villages, and increasingly warmer valleys.
Arrive in Barichara, frequently regarded as one of Colombia’s most beautiful heritage towns.
After check-in, take a guided walk through the historic center.
Stone streets, whitewashed buildings, red-tiled roofs, churches, workshops, and views over the surrounding mountains give Barichara a distinctly different character from Villa de Leyva.
Visit local artisan workshops where traditional crafts such as paper-making, stone carving, ceramics, or weaving may be demonstrated.
Spend sunset at one of the viewpoints overlooking the Suárez River valley.

After an early breakfast, choose between a relaxed morning in Barichara or a section of the historic Camino Real.
The stone path linking Barichara with the village of Guane is one of the region’s classic walks.
Terravelers who prefer a gentler day can remain in town while more active travelers hike part or all of the route, depending on weather and fitness.
Later in the morning, depart by private vehicle toward Bucaramanga Airport.
Board a daytime domestic flight to Medellín. Flight schedules vary, and nonstop availability depends on the operating airline and date, so the specific service is confirmed when the tour is booked. LATAM currently markets Bucaramanga–Medellín services, although some dates may involve connections.
Upon arrival, meet your driver and transfer to the hotel.
The remainder of the afternoon or evening is free.

The city has changed dramatically over recent decades, and the most useful tour goes beyond merely photographing its famous public spaces.
Start with an overview of Medellín’s urban geography and transport system before visiting selected neighborhoods and public projects.

After breakfast, leave Medellín for the colorful lakeside town of Guatapé.
The journey takes you through the green landscapes east of the city toward a reservoir dotted with islands, peninsulas, and flooded valleys.
Visit Piedra del Peñol, the massive granite monolith rising above the reservoir.
Active terravelers can climb the hundreds of steps to the summit for panoramic views.
Continue to Guatapé.
Walk through streets decorated with colorful zócalos, painted reliefs depicting local occupations, animals, traditions, and family histories.
Enjoy lunch before taking a boat ride across the reservoir if desired.
Return to Medellín in the late afternoon.

After breakfast, leave Medellín and travel southwest toward Jardín.
The drive usually takes around three to four hours through increasingly mountainous coffee-growing country. Colombia’s official tourism portal places Jardín about 130 kilometers from Medellín and highlights the town for its coffee culture, natural landscapes, and heritage character.
Arrive around midday and check into the hotel.
After lunch, begin a guided coffee farm experience in the countryside surrounding Jardín.

The exact activities depend on the agricultural cycle. A responsible farm tour should never pretend that harvesting is taking place when it is not.
Coffee experiences around Jardín typically take several hours and follow the production process from plant to cup.
Return to town in the afternoon.
Spend the evening around Parque El Libertador, where brightly painted balconies, cafés, and the stone Basilica create one of Colombia’s most atmospheric small-town settings.

After breakfast, continue south through the mountains toward Salento, entering Colombia’s traditional Coffee Cultural Landscape.
This is a scenic but winding journey, so the day is deliberately kept relatively light.
Arrive in Salento during the afternoon and check into the hotel.
Explore the town at your own pace.
Walk along Calle Real, visit local craft shops, drink another excellent Colombian coffee, and climb toward one of the viewpoints above town.
If desired, ride in one of the brightly colored Willys Jeeps traditionally used throughout the coffee region.
Salento is the principal gateway to the Cocora Valley and its famous wax palms. Colombia’s official tourism material specifically highlights the Willys journey between Salento and Cocora as one of the characteristic experiences of the Coffee Cultural Landscape.

After an early breakfast, travel by private vehicle or traditional Willys Jeep into the Cocora Valley.
The valley is home to Colombia’s national tree, the Quindío wax palm, which can reach heights of up to approximately 60 meters. It is the tallest palm species in the world and one of Colombia’s most recognizable natural symbols.
Choose the walk according to fitness and available time.
A shorter route leads through the open valley among the most impressive concentrations of wax palms.
More active terravelers can continue into cloud forest on a longer circuit involving steeper trails and suspension bridges.
The full circuit can require approximately five hours and reach elevations approaching 3,000 meters, so it is not necessary for every traveler.
After the walk, enjoy lunch in the valley or Salento.
Transfer to Armenia or Pereira Airport, depending on the best onward flight.
The journey ends at the airport.
