Discover the heart of the Inca world on a seven-day journey through Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. Explore the historic center of Cusco and the monumental walls of Sacsayhuamán, travel through the villages and archaeological landscapes of the Sacred Valley, and complete the famous two-day Short Inca Trail experience to Machu Picchu. After reaching the citadel through Intipunku, return the following day for a guided visit before travelling back toward Cusco aboard a panoramic train. This itinerary balances archaeology, culture, mountain scenery, walking, and enough acclimatization time to make the journey enjoyable rather than unnecessarily rushed.
Arrive at the International Airport in Cusco and meet your private driver for the short transfer to your hotel in the historic center.
Cusco lies at approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, so the first day is deliberately kept light. Even fit terravelers can feel the altitude during their first hours in the city, and beginning with a demanding hike immediately after arrival is a poor idea.
After check-in, take the afternoon at your own pace.
Depending on arrival time and energy levels, explore the streets around Plaza de Armas, walk through the artisan quarter of San Blas, visit a café overlooking the old city, or simply rest at the hotel.
The mixture of Inca stone foundations, Spanish colonial architecture, churches, courtyards, steep streets, and modern Peruvian life makes Cusco much more than a logistical stop on the way to Machu Picchu.

After breakfast, begin a privately guided exploration of Cusco.
Start in the historic center with Plaza de Armas, once part of the ceremonial heart of the Inca capital. Continue through streets where enormous Inca stone walls still form the foundations of colonial buildings constructed after the Spanish conquest.
Visit Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, one of the most important religious complexes of the Inca Empire. The Spanish later built the Convent of Santo Domingo over the site, creating one of Cusco’s clearest examples of Inca and colonial architecture occupying the same physical space.
Continue to Sacsayhuamán, overlooking the city from the hills above Cusco.
The scale of the stonework is extraordinary. Massive blocks—some weighing many tonnes—were shaped and fitted together with remarkable precision. The zigzagging defensive and ceremonial walls remain among the finest examples of monumental Inca construction.

The remainder of the day is free to explore independently, visit the San Pedro Market, enjoy Peruvian cuisine, or simply continue acclimatizing before travelling into the Sacred Valley.

After breakfast, leave Cusco by private vehicle and descend into the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The lower altitude and warmer climate make the valley both agriculturally productive and physically easier for many travelers after a night or two in Cusco.
Stop first at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley before continuing toward Pisac.
Visit the archaeological complex above the modern village. Terraces sweep across the mountainsides while temples, residential sectors, pathways, and burial areas reveal the strategic and agricultural importance of the site.
Continue into Pisac village and, depending on the day, explore its market before travelling west through the valley.
Lunch is served at a selected restaurant or hacienda.
In the afternoon, continue to Ollantaytambo, one of the most impressive surviving Inca settlements in Peru.
Climb through the archaeological complex to the Temple of the Sun sector and look across the valley toward the enormous mountain faces surrounding the town.
Ollantaytambo is particularly interesting because the settlement below the archaeological site still follows much of its original Inca street plan, complete with narrow lanes and functioning water channels.
Spend the night here rather than returning to Cusco. This reduces unnecessary driving and places terravelers close to the railway for the following morning.

After an early breakfast, transfer to Ollantaytambo railway station.
Board an early train along the Urubamba River, but instead of continuing all the way to Machu Picchu Pueblo, leave the train near Kilometer 104, the traditional starting point for the Short Inca Trail.
After passing the trail control, cross the river and begin walking near the archaeological site of Chachabamba.
The trail climbs steadily into increasingly lush cloud-forest vegetation.
Unlike the classic four-day Inca Trail, this shortened route avoids several days of camping and the high passes of the longer trek while still allowing terravelers to approach Machu Picchu on foot along part of the historic Inca road network.
Continue toward Wiñay Wayna, one of the finest archaeological complexes along the Inca Trail.
Agricultural terraces cascade down the mountainside while stone buildings, ceremonial areas, stairways, and water channels occupy the steep terrain above the Urubamba Valley.
After a break and box lunch, continue along the trail through cloud forest.
Eventually reach Intipunku — the Sun Gate.
For many travelers, this is the defining moment of the trek: Machu Picchu appears below, surrounded by steep green peaks and deep valleys.
Rather than conducting the complete archaeological visit immediately, continue through the upper area and take the bus down to Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes.
Check into the hotel and enjoy a well-earned shower and dinner.
The Short Inca Trail is an officially regulated route within the Machu Picchu archaeological road network and requires advance permits through an authorized operator. Peru’s Ministry of Culture lists the Chachabamba–Wiñay Wayna–Machu Picchu route among the authorized Inca Trail routes.

After breakfast, take one of the first shuttle buses from Machu Picchu Pueblo toward the archaeological sanctuary.
Enter Machu Picchu with your licensed guide for a detailed visit through the circuit confirmed with your entrance ticket.
Since 2024, Machu Picchu has operated with three principal circuits subdivided into specific routes. The classic archaeological visit is generally associated with Circuit 2, while panoramic and mountain routes fall under Circuits 1 and 3. The exact route must therefore be secured when the entrance ticket is booked and cannot simply be changed at the gate.
Explore terraces, ceremonial areas, residential sectors, plazas, stonework, and water systems while learning how the citadel fits into the wider Inca landscape.
Because terravelers approached Machu Picchu through the Inca Trail the previous afternoon, this morning provides time to examine the site properly rather than simply taking the classic photograph and leaving.
After the visit, return by bus to Machu Picchu Pueblo.
Enjoy lunch independently before boarding a panoramic train for the journey back through the Urubamba Valley.
For this example itinerary, we recommend the PeruRail Vistadome Observatory or a comparable panoramic service. The Vistadome Observatory currently combines large panoramic windows with an open-air observation carriage, onboard snacks, and scenic views through the Sacred Valley. Services operate between Machu Picchu Pueblo and stations including Ollantaytambo and Cusco/Poroy depending on timetable and season.
Sit back after the trek and watch the landscape change from cloud forest to the high Andes.
Depending on the selected departure and seasonal railway operation, continue by train and/or private transfer to Cusco.
Arrive during the evening and check into the hotel.

After breakfast, head back into the highlands for a more relaxed final excursion.
Begin at Moray, where enormous circular agricultural terraces descend into natural depressions in the landscape.
The site is commonly interpreted as having been connected with Inca agricultural experimentation because different terrace levels create varying microclimates. Whatever the exact historical function, Moray offers a striking example of how extensively the Incas manipulated terrain and water.
Continue toward Maras and the famous salt terraces.
Thousands of shallow pools cling to the side of a steep valley, fed by naturally salty water emerging from the mountain.
Salt has been produced here for generations, and the white, cream, brown, and pink pools create one of the Sacred Valley’s most unusual human-made landscapes.
