Travel along Colombia’s Caribbean coast on a seven-day journey combining colonial cities, tropical beaches, rainforest, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Start in colorful Cartagena, continue east to Santa Marta, and spend a full day inside Tayrona National Natural Park before slowing the pace on the coast. The route mixes history, nature, local food, and beach time without trying to cram the entire Caribbean into one exhausting itinerary. This is a strong first-time Colombia tour for terravelers who want both culture and tropical scenery.

Day 1 – Arrival in Cartagena

Arrive at Rafael Núñez International Airport in Cartagena and meet your private driver for the short transfer to your hotel in the historic center or Getsemaní.

After check-in, take the afternoon at a relaxed pace.

Cartagena is best explored on foot. Its walled old town is a maze of balconies, churches, plazas, restaurants, colonial mansions, and brightly painted facades. Getsemaní, just outside the original walls, offers a more informal atmosphere with street art, cafés, bars, and neighborhood plazas.

Depending on arrival time, begin with a guided orientation walk through:

Day 2 – Cartagena, San Felipe and Caribbean History

Start with Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the enormous fortress built on San Lázaro Hill to defend Cartagena against attacks from land.

Walk through parts of the tunnel system and learn why Cartagena became one of the Spanish Empire’s most strategically important ports in the Caribbean.

Continue to the old city for a deeper look at the colonial center.

Day 3 – Cartagena to Santa Marta

After breakfast, leave Cartagena and travel east along Colombia’s Caribbean coast toward Santa Marta.

The overland journey takes several hours, passing through Barranquilla and coastal lowlands before reaching the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Depending on the preferred pace, stop along the way for lunch or a short visit in Barranquilla.

Arrive in Santa Marta during the afternoon and check into the hotel.

Santa Marta is considerably smaller and more relaxed than Cartagena. It also provides the natural gateway to Tayrona National Natural Park and the Sierra Nevada.

Later, explore the historic center on foot.

Day 4 – Tayrona National Natural Park

After an early breakfast, depart Santa Marta for Tayrona National Natural Park.

Enter through the appropriate sector according to conditions and the final itinerary.

A classic day combines tropical forest hiking with beaches along the Caribbean coast.

Depending on the selected route, walk through forest and coastal vegetation toward areas such as:

• Cañaveral
• Arrecifes
• Arenilla
• La Piscina
• Cabo San Juan

The terrain varies from forest paths and wooden walkways to beaches, stones, roots, and humid tropical sections.

The National Park does not guarantee swimming at every beach. Some sectors experience dangerous currents, and red-flag beaches remain closed for swimming. Visitors must follow local safety instructions.

At Cabo San Juan or another authorized beach, enjoy time for swimming and resting if conditions permit.

Lunch is taken inside or near the park.

Return to Santa Marta in the late afternoon or early evening.

Day 5 – Minca and the Sierra Nevada Foothills

After breakfast, leave the coast and travel into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

The mountain village of Minca sits in cooler, greener terrain above Santa Marta and provides a striking contrast to the hot Caribbean coast.

Spend the day exploring a mixture of nature, coffee, and mountain scenery.

A typical program can include:

• local coffee farm
• cacao experience
• forest walk
• waterfall

• lunch in the hills

Visit a small coffee property and learn how coffee is grown, harvested, processed, dried, roasted, and prepared.

Another possibility is a boat excursion from Santa Marta or Taganga to an authorized beach area, depending on sea conditions and current access rules.

Spend the day swimming, relaxing, snorkeling, or simply enjoying the coast.

Lunch can be arranged at a beach restaurant or included with the boat excursion.

Return to Santa Marta in the late afternoon.

The final evening is free.

Day 7 – Santa Marta Departure

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.
