Passport Validity + Entry Rules Tightened for Travelers to Peru

Passport Validity + Entry Rules Tightened for Travelers to Peru

If you’re heading to Peru, note this new requirement: as of mid-2025, all visitors must have passports valid for at least six months from their date of entry. Border control has started enforcing this more strictly than before. Travelers arriving with passports that expire sooner are being turned back.

In addition, Peru continues to require visitors to have proof of onward or return travel, and also enough funds for their stay — especially if arriving through remote border crossings or less touristic entry points. While visa rules remain unchanged for many nationalities, those who do need a visa are expected to have all their paperwork in order before arrival.

For digitally nomadic travelers, students, or anyone staying for longer periods, be aware: vehicle rentals, domestic flights, and lodging checks are often tied to these entry requirements. Missing documentation doesn’t just risk denial at immigration — it can also lead to delays or extra verification at airports and land borders.

Other travel-tips for Peru in 2025:

  • Confirm the validity period of your passport before booking.

  • Check entry rules dependent on your nationality; some consulates require evidence of financial solvency.

  • In high-altitude or Amazon regions, bring proof of vaccinations that are currently advised.

  • If arriving by land from neighboring countries, ensure all documents (passport, entry permits, visas if needed) comply with new tightened standards.

These changes are part of Peru’s broader effort to improve security at immigration points, reduce fraudulent entries, and streamline tourist flows. They don’t affect tourism broadly, but they do make preparation more important — don’t leave it last minute.
