Tour Overview

Experience the classic Costa Rica route on a ten-day journey from San José through Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Travel from Caribbean rainforest canals to volcanic landscapes, cloud forest, hanging bridges, wildlife-rich national parks, and finally the Pacific coast. This itinerary combines the destinations most first-time visitors want to see while avoiding constant one-night stops. It is especially well suited to terravelers from North America, Australia, and Europe who want a broad introduction to Costa Rica without driving themselves.

Day 1 – Arrival in San José

Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport and meet your private driver after clearing immigration and collecting your luggage.

Transfer to a comfortable hotel in or just outside San José.

For most international arrivals, I would actually favor a property on the western side of the metropolitan area or around Alajuela / Santa Ana / Escazú, depending on arrival time and the following morning’s pickup. There is little value in forcing tired travelers through additional city traffic simply to sleep downtown.

The first night is deliberately free of scheduled activities.

Check in, have dinner at the hotel or nearby, and recover from the international flight.

Day 2 – San José to Tortuguero

Leave the hotel early in the morning and travel east toward Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands.

The route crosses the mountains and descends into increasingly humid tropical country before continuing toward the boat embarkation point.

After breakfast en route, board a motorized boat for the journey into Tortuguero.

There are no normal road connections into Tortuguero village. The final section of the journey is by boat through rivers and canals, which means the wildlife experience begins before reaching the lodge.

Tortuguero National Park protects an immense system of tropical rainforest, wetlands, beaches, lagoons, and waterways on Costa Rica’s northeastern Caribbean coast. SINAC describes it as one of Costa Rica’s principal tourism icons and notes that it protects the most important green-turtle nesting beach in the Western Hemisphere.

Arrive at the lodge and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, visit Tortuguero Village or join an introductory wildlife excursion, depending on the selected lodge program.

The precise order of activities is normally determined locally according to weather, wildlife activity, water levels, and lodge logistics.

Day 3 – Tortuguero National Park

Wake to the sounds of the Caribbean rainforest.

Early morning is one of the best times to explore the canals because temperatures are cooler and wildlife is often more active.

Board a small boat with a local naturalist guide and navigate quietly through the waterways of Tortuguero National Park.

Possible wildlife sightings include:

• howler monkeys
• spider monkeys
• capuchin monkeys
• sloths
• caimans
• iguanas
• river turtles
• toucans
• herons
• kingfishers
• macaws
• numerous other tropical birds

SINAC describes Tortuguero as Costa Rica’s largest protected sample of humid tropical forest and notes the abundance of birds and aquatic wildlife throughout its canals and rivers.

Return to the lodge for breakfast and spend part of the day relaxing.

A second excursion may include a rainforest trail, additional canal exploration, or a visit to the national park sector closest to the lodge.

Turtle Nesting Season

During the appropriate season, an authorized nighttime sea-turtle nesting excursion may be added.

Turtle encounters are highly regulated, and sightings are never guaranteed. Visitors must follow guides and conservation rules because the beach is an active nesting habitat rather than a wildlife show.

Return to the lodge after the evening activity.

Day 4 – Tortuguero to Arenal / La Fortuna

After breakfast, leave Tortuguero by boat and return to the road network.

Meet your private driver and continue west toward La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano.

The landscape gradually changes from Caribbean lowland rainforest to agricultural country and finally to the foothills surrounding Arenal.

Arrive in La Fortuna during the afternoon and check into the hotel.

If skies are clear, the nearly symmetrical profile of Arenal Volcano dominates the landscape around town.

The remainder of the afternoon is intentionally relaxed.

In the evening, visit one of the area’s thermal hot-spring complexes.

The region contains several options, ranging from relatively simple natural pools to sophisticated resorts with landscaped thermal gardens, restaurants, and private bathing areas.

Enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel.

Day 5 – Arenal Volcano, Hanging Bridges and Hot Springs

After breakfast, begin a full day exploring the Arenal region.

Start with a guided walk through Arenal Volcano National Park or another protected reserve near the volcano.

The official tourism authority describes Arenal as one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica’s Northern Zone. Trails including Heliconias, Coladas, Tucanes, and Los Miradores provide access to rainforest, viewpoints, wildlife habitat, and remnants of historic lava flows. The park currently opens daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Continue to a hanging bridges reserve.

Walk through forest at different heights, crossing suspension bridges above ravines and through the canopy.

A naturalist guide improves the experience considerably because many animals remain almost invisible to inexperienced eyes.

Possible sightings include:

• monkeys
• coatis
• toucans
• hummingbirds
• frogs
• snakes
• lizards
• tropical insects

Enjoy lunch before returning to the hotel.

The late afternoon is free.

Terravelers who want more activity can instead add:

Day 6 – Arenal to Monteverde

After breakfast, leave Arenal for Monteverde.

Rather than driving the entire way around Lake Arenal, a popular and scenic option combines:

vehicle → boat across Lake Arenal → vehicle to Monteverde

Luggage travels with the transfer, making this one of the more enjoyable point-to-point journeys in Costa Rica.

Cross the lake beneath the volcano before continuing into the mountains.

As the road climbs toward Monteverde, the environment becomes cooler, windier, and noticeably different from the tropical lowlands.

Arrive around midday and check into the hotel.

In the afternoon, take a relaxed orientation walk or visit a local producer.

Possible experiences include:

• coffee
• cacao
• sugar cane
• cheese
• hummingbird gardens
• butterfly gardens

After dinner, join an optional guided night walk.

The cloud forest changes dramatically after sunset, revealing frogs, insects, sleeping birds, mammals, spiders, and occasionally snakes.

Day 7 – Monteverde Cloud Forest

After breakfast, begin a guided exploration of the Monteverde cloud forest region.

Cloud forest is one of Costa Rica’s most distinctive ecosystems.

Moisture carried by wind condenses across the mountains, creating a cool environment filled with mosses, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, epiphytes, and dense vegetation.

Walk with a naturalist guide through one of the principal reserves.

Bird enthusiasts may hope to see the resplendent quetzal, but—as with all wildlife—no sighting can be guaranteed.

Other possibilities include:

• coatis
• agoutis
• monkeys

In the afternoon, choose between relaxation and adventure.

A classic Monteverde option is a combination of:

ziplining + suspension bridges

Costa Rica helped popularize canopy ziplining internationally, and Monteverde remains one of the best-known places to experience it.

Travelers uninterested in adrenaline activities can instead choose an additional forest walk, coffee tour, botanical experience, or afternoon at leisure.

Day 8 – Monteverde to Manuel Antonio

After breakfast, descend from the mountains and travel south toward Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast.

The journey moves through lower, warmer landscapes before eventually reaching Quepos and Manuel Antonio.

Depending on the route and timing, stop along the way near the Pacific coast for lunch or wildlife observation.

Arrive during the afternoon and check into the hotel.

The remainder of the day is free.

Relax by the pool, walk to a nearby beach, or enjoy sunset over the Pacific.

Overnight: Manuel Antonio / Quepos

Day 9 – Manuel Antonio National Park

After an early breakfast, meet your naturalist guide and visit Manuel Antonio National Park.

Despite its relatively compact terrestrial area, the park protects tropical forest, rocky headlands, white-sand beaches, and marine habitat.

Wildlife frequently observed in the region includes:

• sloths
• capuchin monkeys
• squirrel monkeys
• howler monkeys
• iguanas
• agoutis
• tropical birds

The park currently operates Wednesday through Monday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and is closed on Tuesdays. Tickets must be obtained through SINAC’s online reservation system.

Walk the forest trails with your guide before spending time at one of the accessible beaches, if conditions permit.

Swimming conditions vary, and local instructions should always be followed.

Return to the hotel around midday.

The afternoon is free for:

• beach time
• catamaran excursion
• snorkeling
• kayaking
• additional wildlife tour
• simply doing nothing

For this itinerary, I would deliberately keep the last afternoon open.

After eight days of early starts and nature excursions, terravelers generally appreciate having a few hours when nobody is explaining another bromeliad to them.

Day 10 – Manuel Antonio to San José Airport

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.

Meet your private driver and travel north toward Juan Santamaría International Airport.

The drive generally takes several hours and is highly dependent on traffic around the metropolitan area.

For that reason, this itinerary works best with an afternoon or evening international departure.

For morning flights, Terra Sur Travels would normally add another hotel night near San José Airport rather than risk missing the international flight.

Arrive at the airport with sufficient time for check-in and departure formalities.
