You continue hiking besides Polylepis trees that are one of the few species that grow up here in this raw and isolated region.
Late afternoon, you will arrive at your second campsite, where you will set up your tent right at the foot of Carihuairazo, at 3990m.

Day 3: Mechahuasca Refuge

Hiking along the southern flank of Carihuairazo is on today's program.
An ascent to 4500m makes this morning rather demanding.
Later on, you will have it easier until you reach Mechahuasca, an indigenous community. Here you will have the chance to spot vicuñas and llamas.
The night will be spent in a basic refuge within the community.
Tonight, you can enjoy a cold beer. You earned it!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
    Accommodation: Campsite

Day 4: Carrel Refuge

After breakfast, another 6 to 8 hours of trekking are ahead of you, this time along the north-western flank of Chimborazo.
This area is more desert-like with paramo flowers around you.
Herds of vicuñas are grassing up here, the undomesticated camelid living in Ecuador.
With good weather conditions you can see Chimborazo’s glaciers.
The trail will later take you up to 4850m to Carrel Refuge, where this amazing hike ends.
From here, you will be brought back to Riobamba.
