4-Day Trekking Volcano Circuit
Trekking amongst these stunning volcanoes is simply beautiful and designed for all the passionate hikers among you.
In 4 days and 3 nights, you will hike between the majestic Chimborazo and its direct neighbour, Carihuairazo.
Just imagine this: the unpredictable weather, camping in the wilderness, as well as staying overnight in a basic refuge on your last night make this trek truly an adventure.
Notes:
- It is important to keep in mind that you will have altitudes between 3600m and 4800m. You will need to have proper acclimatization before your trek.

Day 1: Tisaleo
Private transportation will bring you this morning one hour north of Riobamba, to the sleepy village of Tisaleo, located east of Carihuairazo at 3300m.
- 5 hours of hiking takes you up 550m to your first campsite.
- Enjoy a coca tea this evening and let your thoughts wander into the distance.
- Meals included: Box lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Carihuairazo Base
Today, after breakfast, you will hike further up. At a pass at 4270m, you will have, only and hopefully with clear skies, a fantastic view of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Altar and Carihuairazo.
- You continue hiking besides Polylepis trees that are one of the few species that grow up here in this raw and isolated region.
- Late afternoon, you will arrive at your second campsite, where you will set up your tent right at the foot of Carihuairazo, at 3990m.

Day 3: Mechahuasca Refuge
Hiking along the southern flank of Carihuairazo is on today's program.
- An ascent to 4500m makes this morning rather demanding.
- Later on, you will have it easier until you reach Mechahuasca, an indigenous community. Here you will have the chance to spot vicuñas and llamas.
- The night will be spent in a basic refuge within the community.
- Tonight, you can enjoy a cold beer. You earned it!

Day 4: Carrel Refuge
After breakfast, another 6 to 8 hours of trekking are ahead of you, this time along the north-western flank of Chimborazo.
- This area is more desert-like with paramo flowers around you.
- Herds of vicuñas are grassing up here, the undomesticated camelid living in Ecuador.
- With good weather conditions you can see Chimborazo’s glaciers.
- The trail will later take you up to 4850m to Carrel Refuge, where this amazing hike ends.
- From here, you will be brought back to Riobamba.
