3-Day Climbing Cotopaxi
Cotopaxi, probably Latin America’s most picturesque mountain. A true beauty! This 3-day program will take you up to Cotopaxi’s summit, Ecuador’s second-highest mountain at 5897m and one of the most famous peaks in Latin America.
The volcano is still active to date, the last bigger eruption only happened in 2016.
You will need a high level of personal fitness to reach the summit, as well as proper acclimatization beforehand.

Day 1: Rumiñahui Summit
Today your adventure begins!
- You will be picked up in your hotel in Quito and driven to the Cotopaxi National Park.
- Here you start with your acclimatization hike at Cotopaxi’s neighbouring volcano, Rumiñahui, with a height of 4721m.
- At 3900m, next to Limpiopungo lagoon, the trek begins. You will hike approximately 5 hours to the summit and back, passing impressive moorlands, and the last part to the summit is an easy rocky climb to Rumiñahui Central.
- You will enjoy dinner later tonight in your lodge.

Day 2: Cotopaxi Refuge
After breakfast, you will have time to spend a few relaxing hours in and around the lodge before you will be brought to Cotopaxi.
- Your driver drops you off at 4500m and you will walk the rest, a few hundred meters only, to the refuge.
- Dinner will be early today, before sunset, so you can catch a few hours of sleep since your ascent to the summit will start around midnight. Cotopaxi is waiting for you!

Day 3: Cotopaxi Summit
At 4800m, your trip starts in the darkness. The goal is to reach the summit before sunrise. With mountains around you and the distant lights of Quito in the background, you will walk across an alpine glacier in 5 or 6 hours to the top.
- At sunset, you will be able to enjoy the magnificent views and beautiful colors.
- Later on, you will descend back to the refuge. This will take around 3 hours.
- Here, your adventure ends and you will be taken back to Quito, with loads of memories in your backpack.
