What you see in this photo is the very last Inca Bridge standing 🤯
The fascinating Q'eswachaka!

Every year in June, the Apurímac river canyon in Cusco witnesses a thousand-year-old tradition that reflects the art and technique of the Andean world: the renovation of the last Inca bridge.

The ceremony begins with the dismantling of the bridge built the previous year by dropping the old bases on the river. Next, the work of collecting the qoya-ichu-straw material that is used for the elaboration of the bases and railings of the bridge-takes place.

This activity is generally carried out by the women and children of the communities.

During the following days, the men of the families come together to tie the ropes to the ancient stone bases located on both sides of the gorge.

The task includes the placement of an extensive carpet, made of branches, to completely cover the floor of the platform.

Once the work is finished and the structure is ready, the leaders of each community prepare to inaugurate the work in a ceremony always accompanied by good food, stews that include alpaca and guinea pig, and traditional dances.

The oldest church in Cuenca is the Cathedral or Old Cathedral as it is known today, it was built just 10 years after the Spanish foundation of the city.

The church was born with the official Spanish foundation on April 12, 1557.

Carved stones brought from the ruins of the Inca centre, Tomebamba, served for the foundations and bases of the walls.

HIDDEN GEM ALERT 🚨
A place that you have never heard of before in Arequipa, Peru 😯

With an extension of 2 km in length, the Ruta del Sillar is one of the greatest attractions of the region.
Sillar stone is a sediment of volcanic origin made up of ashes and lapilli, which are small fragments of lava expelled during volcanic eruptions.

The use of this material dates back to pre-Inca times and endured over time thanks to its lightness, softness and plasticity. These features inspired master stonemasons to sculpt both Hispanic and indigenous figures.

The tour is organized by the Center for Research, Education and Development of Arequipa (CIED) and includes visits to the Añashuayco, Cortadores and Culebrillas quarries, located on the outskirts of the city.

In this place, you will be amazed by many sculptures, shields, utensils and many other pieces worked in ashlar.

One of the most visited points is the Sillar Rosado, a canyon that, thanks to the particular combination of sand, rock, ashlar and the effects of sunlight, reflects a captivating pink colour in its structures.

Due to its narrow terrain, the experience that is lived when crossing it makes one feel like the character Indiana Jones.

Another visit, it is to the Culebrillas Quarry. Here, you can take a walk through the interior of the ravine and contemplate figures engraved on cliffs over 30 meters high belonging to the Wari culture.

Welcome to The Devil's Nose Train: the most terrifying route in Ecuador😳

They say that here the devil left his nose behind and the truth is that this gigantic rock takes on a nose shape, as if it wanted to snoop through the Andes mountain range.

The Devil's Nose is the obstacle encountered, at the beginning of the 20th century, by the construction of the most ambitious railway in Ecuador: the one that linked Guayaquil with Quito, that is, the sticky Pacific coast with the slender peaks snowfall.

Through the slopes of the nose of the devil the trains pass or rather advance and retreat in a vertiginous zigzag. And passengers enjoy (or suffer) the jagged rocks that almost touch the window on one side and the deep abysses on the other.

The Ecuadorian mountain range unfolds before your eyes, a good part of what the German scientist Alexander Von Humboldt described as the Avenue of the Volcanoes, that inter-Andean corridor that winds between more than 70 parallel volcanoes (27 of them still active) along 300 kilometers.

A mountain range that reaches its maximum height in Chimborazo (6,263 meters), the highest fire colossus in the world and the furthest point from the center of the Earth.

Today the Devil's Nose Train is not operational, being one of the many attractions affected by the pandemic.

There is hope that the train will retrace its amazing rails through the Ecuadorian Andes...hopefully very soon.
