Day 1: Hello Cusco

Upon landing at Cusco airport, you will be taken by private transportation to your hotel. You will have a short briefing on your trip and the rest of the day will be free to relax and acclimatize to the high altitude.

Day 2: Around Cusco

This morning you will need to strap on your walking shoes as you will stroll around Cusco's historic centre. This walking city tour will take you not only through the most touristic sites in Cusco such as the Main Square, Cathedral and Koricancha “Temple of the Sun”, but also along ancient streets, local markets, and old neighbourhoods where you will discover the magic of Cusco. This hike is the perfect way to get a more authentic feel of this amazing city and its people. The afternoon will be free so you can wander and enjoy the city at your own pace.

Day 3: Misminay, Moray Terraces, Ollantaytambo & Train to Aguas Calientes

This morning, you will set off to visit some of the Sacred Valley's most impressive sites. First, you visit the Misminay community, where you will be able to see an agricultural or textile demonstration and share some activities with the community. Second, you will go to Moray, one of the most important Inca sites consisting of circular terraces built upon a natural depression. For lunch, you will go to a local restaurant near the town of Urubamba to enjoy the delicious local cuisine. Next, you visit the Ollantaytambo archaeological site, an impressive Inca complex that protected this area from incursions from the Amazon Basin. You will walk along its cobblestone streets while looking around the village. Finally, you head to the train station to board the afternoon train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be taken to your hotel.

Day 4: Around Machu Picchu

Early in the morning, you will take a 30-minutes bus up the steep zigzagging road to Machu Picchu Citadel, located in an impressive mountain setting. On arrival, you first head to the terrace sector from where you will have a fantastic view of the main site. There you can sit down and enjoy the amazing scenery while you listen to the incredible story about Machu Picchu. Your guide will be more than happy to try and show you every corner of the famous citadel and answer any questions, so you have a better understanding of Machu Picchu and the Inca culture. Depending on your pace, this activity could last from 2 to 4 hours. After visiting Machu Picchu, you will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, and from there you will continue by private transport to Cusco.
Important Notes:
  • Be sure to be at the train station 30minutes before your train departure.
  • Please don't forget to bring your passport with you since it will be required when entering Machu Picchu.

Day 5: Journey into the Amazon Rainforest

On this day you will go back to Cusco airport to board a flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peru's Southern Amazon and Tambopata National Reserve. Upon arrival, your jungle specialist guide will welcome you and drive to the local office to leave any excess luggage. Next, you will drive for an hour to the local port to board a motorboat to the lodge. The route will take approximately an hour to the buffer zone of the National Reserve along the Tambopata River. You will enjoy a tasty box lunch on the way. Upon arrival at the refuge, the manager will welcome and brief you on primary navigation and security tips. You will then have some free time to relax and, in the evening, you can join the Jungle Night Walk. This activity will give you a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the nocturnal wonders of the Amazon Rainforest. At night, you will enjoy a delicious dinner in this comfortable refuge deep within the Rainforest. Moreover, your stay at the lodge is an essential contribution to the sustainable efforts to preserve and protect the buffer area of the Tambopata National Reserve.
Important Notes:
  • We recommend booking your flight to Puerto Maldonado to arrive before 14h00.
  • Refugio Amazonas offers a-la-carte activities to choose from according to your interests.

Day 6: Oxbow Lake & Canopy

You can choose between the 23 excursions available at Refugio Amazonas. You can do 3 or 4 activities per day, depending on the duration of the ones you select. For this day, we recommend joining the Oxbow lake, Canopy tower, and ethnobotanical tour activities. After breakfast, go on a catamaran paddling excursion around an Oxbow lake looking for wildlife such as hoatzins, caimans, and horned screamers. Next, you can join the thirty-minute walk from the lodge to the 25-meter scaffolding canopy tower to have fantastic views of the treetops, and if lucky, observe canopy flocks, toucans, macaws, and raptors. In the afternoon, we suggest you take the ethnobotanical tour, where together with an Ese Eja native guide, you will learn about the medicinal use of many plants and trees and how the ancient knowledge is passed from generation to generation. By night, if you still have the energy, you can go on a night walk to try and spot some wildlife.

Day 7: Farewell

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to your Amazonian friends. You will board the boat back to Puerto Maldonado and drive to the airport. On route, you will pass by the main office to collect any baggage you might have left before proceeding to the airport to board your flight to your next destination.
